Recruiters can help you get the job you want because they know employers with available openings. Take the tips and advice from resume reviews they provide as they try to place you. Not only can you get interviewed faster, they might send you out the same day or the next day!


1. Finding a Recruiting Agency to Land Your Dream Job

If you’re looking online for a job and come across a recruiting agency, that’s good, especially if it’s a job you’re interested in. You can ask about the company you want to work for over the phone or in person. The recruiter may work directly with that particular employer, or they may know of an agency that is representing the company. The recruiter may ask why you’re interested in that specific company and may try to sell you to other comparable businesses. Consider their offer, especially if it’s a similar salary and benefits package.


2. Working With a New Recruiter: What To Expect

When you work with a recruiter, it’s similar to an interview but a bit more casual. They will study you from head to toe, but don't be nervous because they assess you. They’re likely considering which roles you would be a “good fit” for and where to send you first. They may ask if you’re working with another recruiter, so let them know if this is your first time. Some recruiters may send you out the same day. Others might want to test your skill sets first and then set up interviews for you.

A business might want to hire a secretary and ask to see ten candidates. The recruiter’s job is to send over ten people for them to interview. They’ll likely ask that you be on your best behavior during your probationary period and stay for at least a year.

With recruiters, because they might be friends with HR managers or business owners, never complain about an interview. You can say that the role wouldn’t “be a good fit” or “wasn’t right for you,” but that should suffice. If you talk about the employer or HR rep, they might have another opening in a different department, and you don’t want to burn a bridge before you get in the door. Let the recruiter know when you’re interested in a position so they can vouch for you and try to get you hired.

Job seekers are sometimes reluctant to work with recruiters. They think they are just another number or that recruiters won’t find them the “best job” because they want to fill vacancies. Recruiters want to ensure that they place the best candidates in roles that will make them a “good fit” so they can help the businesses they work for fill vacancies and reduce turnovers.


6. Should You Use a Recruiter to Interview On Your Own?

Many people shy away from working with recruiters because they don’t want to go on multiple interviews or go through a third party. The downside to going on interviews alone is that you don’t know anyone at the business, and you have to wait for your resume and cover letter to be flagged electronically or manually by someone in HR. The benefit of doing it independently is less pressure as recruiters will send you on multiple interviews. If you want your dream job, though, go through a recruiter, as they likely know people at the company.


7. Your Relationship With Your Recruiter: Meet Your New Best Friend

When you work with a recruiter, they’re like a new best friend. After your initial interview, they’ll likely email you a job description about a position they discussed with you. They’ll ask if you’re interested in an interview, and they’ll set it up. They may even schedule a few interviews over the next few days. Always arrive early at interviews, let the recruiter know you’re there, let them know when the interview ends, and follow up if you liked the company. You can even send the recruiter a thank you card when you’re placed in a new job.
